When you think about everything that goes into a cool lookin' character design - it can feel super overwhelming!
This was definitely the case for me until I knew what I know now...
I'd often feel stuck before I even started! And I don't know about you, but I hate feeling lost. That's why I'm always on the look out for simple methods I can follow, to achieve the results I'm looking for with less confusion and more consistency.
So I broke down my process into 4 stages that build off one another. For me, this has made the whole process of designing characters a heck of a lot more manageable and easier to execute.
...And that's the reason I teach it to all my students!
In the beginning, the main thing we gotta do is get a sturdy foundation down for your figure. For now, that means focusing exclusively on the proportions, pose, and positioning of the base mannequin model.
Next comes the anatomy overlay. At this point, we no longer need to concern ourselves with the foundations of the character, because they're already done!
This optimizes the creative process, and allows us full mental band-width to focus on incorporating the muscle groups with the correct structure, shape, scale, and placement.
Once the anatomy is down we can rest easy, knowing that all the anatomical attributes of the character have been figured out - leaving us free to design the hairstyle, costuming and the overall silhouette of the character.
References come into play in a big way here, helping us to fill in the details - for style, inspiration and real-world accuracy.
Together, these three stages of development make up the character design draft. This is where all the preplanning happens, and the blue print for our character is created!
If the design draft is the cake, the refinement stage is the icing on top. Now we're bringing everything into ultra-sharp focus, as we cast the design in stone with slick, sharp, energetic line art.
In these final phases of the drawing, we're focused on the quality of the line itself, ensuring that it's carefully weighted to create a dynamic contour.
This adds visual interest to the outline, and produces additional depth and dimension within the drawing that wouldn't otherwise be there.
Emphasizing shape, and exaggerating the forms of the character are also something to push for toward the end. Why? Because we want to preserve as much gesture, life and energy from the original sketch as possible.
I recently demonstrated this entire process, step-by-step, in Part 2 of the Superhero Character Design Workshop, now available for instant, on-demand replay inside the How to Draw Comics Academy.
It's a 4.5 hour intensive class that shows you an in-depth look into comic book character creation, with a comprehensive explanation that details every part of the workflow.
And you can get immediate access to it right now. Just click this link to watch: https://www.howtodrawcomics.net/academy-membership-plans
If you've ever wanted an easy to follow gameplan for designing kick-ass comic book superheroes - then you simply can't beat this Workshop. It's designed for you to follow along and create your own character design in real-time... a design you could you use for the hero in your next comic book.
This workshop shows you how to optimize the process of character creation so that you can build your design, layer by layer, in a straight forward, easy to execute way that gives you the best chance of success.
It's the very same character design workflow I use for my personal work, as well as the paid commissions I'm employed to do for clients. And trust me, when you learn this process, and you're designing characters at the level I'm about to show you - you'll be getting more work offers than you can handle!
Fair warning however - this isn't a workshop for dabblers who just want to watch passively, and won't actually put this stuff into action. Know that when you join the HTDC Academy, you'll be part of a community of dedicated artists who are fully committed to levelling up their drawing abilities.
This program is for action takers who have a clear goal in mind and are serious about taking their art to a professional level.
If that's you - then you know what to do next. See you in class!
